Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Hansen Family Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is for people with lung disorders.

There is no worse feeling than being "short of breath". The goal of Pulmonary Rehab is to slow down and minimize the progression and debilitating symptoms of lung disease by combining exercise with education, breathing retraining, nutritional counseling and psychosocial support. Individualized programs are created for patients of all ages who suffer from any of a variety of lung disorders, such as COPD, Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Bronchiectasis, Emphysema, Fibrosis, Restrictive Lung Disease and others. The program is also suggested for lung transplant and lung reduction candidates.

The Pulmonary Rehab program seeks to:

  • Reduce dyspnea/shortness of breath
  • Improve quality of life
  • Increase exercise tolerance and performance
  • Enhance ability to perform activities of daily living
  • Increase knowledge about pulmonary disease and its management
  • Improve sense of well being
  • Reduce hospitalizations and use of medical resources

How the Pulmonary Rehab program works:

After a referral is received from a physician, patients receive an extensive interview, and various tests are completed by a respiratory therapist. Test results are reviewed with your physician. After that time, an exercise program is customized to meet the patient's individualized needs.

The Pulmonary Rehab Program meets two times per week. During these sessions, customized exercise programs are combined with group lectures from hospital staff and a variety of topics consistent with the patient's program. Upon completion of the program, a hospital-based program called Phase 3 is set up so patients can continue to maintain progress and healthy living habits.
