Anywhere chemicals are used presents the risk of dangerous and harmful exposure. Chemical exposures include anything from accidental spraying of farm chemicals to a chemical splash to hte eye at home.

Proper handling of a chemical exposure can help rprevent or minimize long-lasting health effects for those exposed and prevent unintended exposure to others. If you are exposed to a harmful chemical, know the risks and proper response to safely decontaminate.

If you feel you need to take yourself to the hospital, call ahead and a member of the care team will meet you outside.

First Steps

  • Call 911
  • Remove yourself form the contaminated area (remove clothing if exposed)
  • Follow the chemical manufacturer's instructions

Arrival at Hansen Family Hospital

  • Call 641-648-7005 to let the emergency staff know you are coming. If you are transporting yourself or another party, contact the facility to inform them of your arrival.
  • DO NOT enter facility through any walk-in entrance.
  • From outside the facility, follow the medical professionals' instructions for safe decontamination.
  • From Highway 65, use the emergency entrance driveway and follow directions to the Emergency Services parking lot.
  • Enter through the marked Decon Door (DO NOT enter the wlak-in lobby entrance).
  • A healthcare professional safely dressed in a decomntamination suit will greet you.
